I don’t really need an excuse or a reason to spend more time in the woods. Particularly on wild mountain streams. But if I did the “Tenkara” style of traditional Japanese fishing is a pretty damn good one. If you aren’t aware, Tenkara is a traditional Japanese style of fishing that is utilized in mountainous areas to feed oneself and to provide fish to sell or to cook at Ryokan’s, or traditional inns.
As a method, it’s extremely technique centric and requires minimal equipment. All that you need is a rod, line, and a fly on a hook. A couple of my training buddies introduced me to it and it’s now one of my favorite things. As a practitioner of a ninjutsu, I can’t help but imagine that the Ninja of old may have very well used this method to feed themselves as they carried out their missions. I will admit to having way too many favorite things and hobbies, but several of my passions take me to the mountains near some beautiful streams and creeks full of trout. So as a bonus, if I carry my Tenkara rod my hunting, camping, and training trips can also become fishing trips. (Link to Tengu and Mountain Quest blogs)
As a wedding present my buddy Hugh got me a Dragontail “Komodo” Tenkara set up.
One of my favorite things about this rod is that it has two lengths that can accommodate tighter quarters or bigger pools. If the rhododendrons are too tight you can shorten it down to the shorter length and if you come across a larger pool it expands to give you a little more length.
My kit came with the rod, a protective tube, the lines that I needed and an assortment of flys. On the bag holding the fly’s there are diagrams of the knots that you need so with a little practice I was up and fishing quickly. The cast requires some technique and my buddies still give me lots of pointers but I’m pulling trout up pretty regularly.
